Well… I saw The Martian last night. Frankly it didn’t motivate me to write a review about it, but I’m taking this as a writing excercise…
So, I didn’t like it. I didn’t hate it. It had entertaining moments, about 15min. overall in different points of the movie (yes, yes, I know how many points it has in IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes! that’s why I watched it in the first place. Don’t trust the numbers, trust your judgement).
The soundtrack was… a very odd choice to say the least, I guess they were trying to be funny with it (or brainwash us) but it didn’t work for me.
The special effects were ok, nothing we haven’t seen before. Apparently Mars looks just like the Grand Canyon, and other deserts right here on Earth, who would have thought! Space, yeah we know it’s black. Matt Damon lost no weight, it was all CGI (the kind that you get to notice).
The script was also ok. Some cheesy lines here and there but nothing to inspire revulsion. Photography ok, no mind blowing scenes, customs same old same.
Now, the acting… There are many characters in the movie, this is no Gravity (it’s not THAT bad), but most of them are small ones, not really affecting the plot nor development of the movie, but taking a substancial face time. All of them were ok, no one stands out.
From the bigger roles:
– Matt Damon did an ok job (noticed the OKs everywhere? yep, this is an OK movie!), according to what I know about the book and movie adaptation, he did what he was asked, but there was not much to do with the role, he did a good job in the few scenes were it was required to actually act.
– Jeff Daniels as the NASA’s big boss… I HATED IT. I honestly don’t know who to blame here, everything was awful, the lines were as lame as humanly possible in an A movie, it was obvious they wanted you to hate him but the character was to much of a looser to make you care. I really don’t know if it was the character or the actor, but it was bad, lame, boring… just get him off the screen, ok good thanks… lest blame the director, he let this happen.
Everyone else was meh… Jessica Chastain looked pretty as the Mission Capitan… she is pretty.
What I did like was the science part of the movie, there was a lot of it, and it’s something I like in general. Don’t know how realistic it was but it was interesting for me, although I feel it was presented in a very boring way that the mainstream viewers wouldn’t like.
So guys, you can see this was not my kind of movie. Maybe it could be yours, but I’m not telling you to watch it.
If you like disco music (like for real), science as in a Discovery Kids show, the kind of jokes that make you laugh on the inside, and no breakthroughs in the SciFi universe, you might enjoy this one!
See you next time…
